A conversation where we meet one of the key people who make Operahuset what it is. A person who plays an important role in the Opera House's story and contributes to the experiences, the hospitality and the inclusive gastronomy. Together, we continue to create memorable moments - one dinner, one party and one experience at a time.
This time we meet Douglas Damm, Project Manager.
Tell us about your background.
I have worked for about six years in the Stureplans Group as a nightclub manager. After a while, I felt a longing to return to my roots - to be close to nature and the forest. For a while I ran a small farm shop, but I soon realized how much I missed meeting people. To develop myself further, I trained at IHM, and almost a year ago I started my journey here at Operahuset.
Tell us about your role.
My role is all about helping clients go from idea to realizing their vision. I am there through the whole process. This can mean anything from booking a lunch at Operabaren to organizing a big event or concert.
What is your elevator pitch for Operahuset?
"One building - a thousand possibilities." We have a fantastic location and offer a high level of service. Here we create customized experiences of the highest class.
What has surprised you the most since you came here?
The level - of everything! From the different kitchens and patisserie to the many different types of customers and experiences we have here.
What is your best trick for building long-term relationships with customers?
Being honest and genuine. Keeping my promises and always having an open and honest dialog. Transparency is key.
Have you ever sold a concept that seemed like a far-fetched idea, but was a success?
Yes, when we turned the whole building into a festival area. We divided it into two areas - Café Opera and Rotundan - with eight different bars. Café Opera was a sure thing, but the other part had never been used in that way before. It was a fantastic success!
For you personally, what event has been the most fun to organize since you started here?
To organize a concert together with Spotify for two of Sweden's biggest artists at Café Opera.
How do you attract new clients - is it networking, recommendations or pure charm?
My network is my most important asset. To succeed in this job, you have to really enjoy meeting people and be genuinely curious about everyone you meet. It opens up opportunities to help them.
What role does the history of the house play when you meet customers?
The history of the house is an important foundation, but my willingness to meet people is the most important tool.
If you were given free hands and unlimited budget, what dream event would you create here in Operahuset?
The Nobel party might be hard to move here... ? But a royal wedding would be amazing!
What is your superpower?
I am kind.
If you could "borrow" a famous person to plan an event with, who would it be?
Some crazy person - maybe one of the people who started Burning Man? Who thinks without boundaries.
If your job was a cocktail, what would it be?
An Espresso Martini. Intense, invigorating and always incredible.
If you weren't doing this, what would you be doing?
I would be working in forestry and hunting.
What is the motto of your profession?
"We do everything to avoid having to say no."
What role does storytelling play in your sales process?
Storytelling is incredibly important. I always weave in the history of the house and combine it with the vision of the future. History should inspire, not limit. Operahuset has often been at the forefront over the years, and that's something we should build on.
Do you have any unexpected talent?
I am a bastard at rowing! Unfortunately, I rarely get to use it at work, haha.
How do you celebrate a really successful delivery?
With my colleagues and a glass of wine.
How would you like people to describe you in 15 years in your professional role?
As a competent, honest yes man.
What do you do when you're not working?
I'm out in nature with my family.
