A conversation where we meet one of the key people who make Operahuset what it is. A person who plays an important role in the Opera House's story and contributes to the experiences, the hospitality and the inclusive gastronomy. Together, we continue to create memorable moments - one dinner, one party and one experience at a time.
This time we meet Malin Norling, Head of Sales & Operations.
Tell us about your background
I knew already at the age of 13 that I wanted to work with hotels and events. My career started at Clarion Arlanda and then I helped to open HOBO, worked centrally with sales at Nobis and launched Ellery Beach House. After a time in Dubai, where I worked with fashion, I returned to Sweden and took the role of International Sales Manager at Space. Today I am Head of Sales & Operations at Operahuset - my dream role, where I get to combine commercial thinking with sales and drive the whole house forward.
Can you tell us about your role at Operahuset?
My role is about bringing all the teams in the house together into one unit. Operahuset houses several activities and it is important to create a seamless experience for our guests. Someone who comes here for a conference one day may return as a nightclub guest the next night. I work to package the whole and ensure that we take care of the guest in the best way.
What is the most challenging and rewarding part of your role?
The most rewarding part is undoubtedly the love from the team and returning guests - it's incredibly energizing! The biggest challenge has been getting people to understand the change we have undergone. Operahuset may look the same on the outside, but the possibilities inside are completely different today. There is so much going on and we want more people to discover it.
What is the biggest difference?
Above all, the people and the way we work. We no longer see ourselves as separate entities - but as one house. Teams collaborate more and work towards the same goals. The visual side has also changed, with upgraded technology, improved interior design and a stronger overall look. But the biggest difference is how we look at the guest and customer relationships.
What would you say is the perfect summer party at Operahuset?
Few places combine central location with greenery and water in the same way as Operahuset. Guests can arrive by boat and enjoy the proximity to Kungsträdgården. Operaterrassen and Lagerlunden are indoors, but give the feeling of being outdoors. We also have several outdoor areas with permits - perfect for an aperitif in the summer evening.
But above all, we can create any kind of environment. Imagine a summer evening that starts with a pentathlon in Kungsträdgården or a drink outdoors to the sounds of a troubadour. Then guests step into Operahuset, where we have built a midsummer corner for tying wreaths, followed by an exclusive cocktail experience in a private bar. The evening continues through the various rooms of the house and perhaps ends with a grand rave in Rotundan.
How do you see hosting?
For me, hosting is about being personal, but not private. Our guests want to feel that they can connect with us - that we see them as individuals. Without that important aspect, it becomes just a business transaction. A genuine relationship is created by being present and engaged. The more personal you dare to be, the stronger and more long-term the relationship will be.
What feeling do you want guests to have when they leave Operahuset?
Warmth. I want every guest to leave with a memory - and it doesn't have to be something big. It can be a detail, a feeling or an experience that touches them on a personal level.
What could a kickoff in Operahuset look like?
Create a theme based on what you want to reinforce in the company culture. Let the whole team interpret and visualize what the company culture means to them by painting something unique. Then exhibit the works in a vernissage - a creative start to the evening. Then a dinner with a live show that ties in with the theme awaits, and the evening ends with a party at Café Opera.
How do you see the future of events and meetings?
We are in uncertain times, which means companies are getting smarter with their investments. However, the need to meet is stronger than ever, but we see a clear trend - more activities and dinners, but fewer traditional meetings. Companies are investing in experiences that strengthen corporate culture, and that's what makes Operahuset the perfect place.
What do you dream of organizing here in the future?
The Elle gala, something connected to Fashion Week or parts of Brilliant Minds. And if the Oscars want to come here, they are welcome, haha!
What song would be the soundtrack to your life?
"Daydream" by Lily Meola.
If you weren't doing this, what would you be doing?
One hundred percent Formula 1 driver!
If your job was a cocktail, what would it be?
An All or Nothing of course! If you haven't tried it at Othilia yet, you must.
